On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four planes. They crashed two into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The terrorists crashed the third plane into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers tried to recapture the plane from the terrorists. In all, 2,993 people died.
This year, on the sixth anniversary of the tragedy, people gathered at the sites of each crash to remember the dead. In New York, moments of silence were held at the times each plane struck the World Trade Center. The names of all 2,750 people who died in the towers were then read aloud. Ceremonies were also held at the Pentagon and in the Pennsylvania field where the fourth plane crashed.
Also on the anniversary, Osama bin Laden, the al Qaeda terrorist leader behind the attacks, released an audiotape praising the 19 hijackers.
