I’ll miss the Shuttle too, in a way. It was a truly remarkable ehctnical achievement. And it produced many inspiring moments, such as the photo above. I’ve never seen it launch first-hand, but I did see it in an iMax theatre, and it’s not something you’ll forget! But in the end, it has to be judged a failure, and a rather serious one. It’s a familiar story: the requirements were changed and what NASA was eventually tasked with building made no sense. The Shuttle is paradoxically the greatest heavy-lifting space vehicle ever made, while also the most expensive for cargo delivery. The main reason is that most of the weight lifted into orbit ends up coming back down. The needs of cargo delivery and crew transport are fundamentally different. By combining them in one vehicle, the Shuttle had to seriously compromise on both counts.
